ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, has once again made it clear that he has no intention of extending his term, firmly rejecting ongoing rumors. His response comes after claims by political figures that he might agree to continue beyond his official tenure.

During an informal chat with journalists, a reporter mentioned Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah’s statement that the Chief Justice would accept an extension if the retirement age for all judges was increased. Justice Isa responded sharply, saying, “Bring Rana Sanaullah in front of me.”

Clarifying the details of a recent meeting, Justice Isa explained that discussions on tenure extensions were held with Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Attorney General, and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar. Rana Sanaullah, however, was not part of this conversation. “In that meeting, the idea of extending the tenures of all chief justices came up. I clearly stated that while others may accept, I won’t. I have no interest in an extension,” Justice Isa firmly stated. He added, “I don’t even know if I’ll be alive tomorrow.”

The Chief Justice confirmed his decision to step down at the end of his term, noting that Justice Mansoor Ali Shah would succeed him. This was also confirmed by Law Minister Tarar.

When asked about the delay in hearing a case involving a letter signed by six judges, Justice Isa explained that the matter is the responsibility of a committee. He further shared that health issues faced by Justice Musarrat Hilali had delayed the formation of the bench.

These remarks come after Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar also addressed the issue in the National Assembly, clarifying that Justice Isa has no desire to extend his service, putting to rest any speculation surrounding his retirement.
