ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday announced that the body has right to take up contempt of court proceedings, issuing a notice to Imran Khan to reply contempt notice by August 23.
A five-member bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Raza Khan, resumed the hearing and announced the verdict, which was reserved on July 25, on Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s application challenging the jurisdiction of the ECP to hear a contempt petition.
The ECP adjourned the case till August 23.
Founding member of PTI, Akbar S Babar had filed the case against Imran Khan after he accused the ECP of political bias in the foreign funding case.
The commission had served the notice to Khan on January 24 due to his controversial remarks about the ECP.
Representing Imran Khan before the ECP bench during last hearing, former senator Babar Awan argued that only the superior judiciary had the power to take up contempt proceedings.
