IHC summons DG NAB on plea moved by Nawaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court summoned National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Director General Irfan Mangi while hearing a petition filed by Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday.

Sharif had sought suspension of seven-year sentence in the Al Azizia Steel Mills case to seek post-arrest bail on medical grounds.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani conducted the proceedings and gave the anti-graft watchdog three days to submit reply and also dispatch it to the deposed premier’s council.

“The bureau has wasted the court’s time,” the bench observed.

During the hearing, jail authorities and medical board submitted reports before the court after which the hearing was adjourned till June 19.

The Supreme Court had earlier rejected a plea filed by the supreme leader of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz in which the former premier had sought extension in the bail on medical grounds; he was granted six-weeks bail by the apex court which expired last month.

The former premier is serving a seven-year prison term at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail since December 24, 2018 in Al-Azizia reference filed by the accountability watchdog.
