SIALKOT (WeB DesK) – At least 70 villages were were badly affected by flash flood on Sunday when heavy rain water eroded protective dyke of Nullah Dek in Pasrur tehsil of Sialkot district, local media reported.
The flood in Nullah Dek, triggered by heavy rain in different cities of Punjab, inundated more than 70 villages where thousands of people left their homes to in search of safer places.
The raging flood waters also inundated thousands of acres of agriculture land in the area.
The breach in the dyke exposed tall claims made by the local administration which had claimed to have spent Rs.120 million over the embankment.
On Saturday, heavy rain was reported from some cities in Punjab, including Rawalpindi.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain-thunder shower at isolated places in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore divisions, Islamabad, Malakand, Hazara, Kalat divisions, upper FATA, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during the next 24 hours.
Furthermore, DCO Multan, Zahid Saleem Gondal, has said that there could be flood as the water level in river Chenab was on rise continuously.
Giving briefing to journalists here on Saturday, he said that they had repaired and improved different embankments with the cooperation of Pakistan Army and canal department, adding that they had also introduce temporary ways for flow of flood water.
The DCO said that they would issue warning before flood threat to sensitize public to leave their places urgently.
He said that the flood could hit 120 villages and nearly 0.2 million population in district Multan, adding that they had completed all arrangements for evacuation of stranded people.
