KARACHI — Pakistan’s second largest city Karachi reported three suspected cases of monkeypox in a single day, with the latest case identified at Jinnah International Airport.
The first suspected case involved a passenger arriving from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saudi Airlines flight SV 708. The second case was a passenger from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, arriving on PIA flight PK 732.
Officials said the third case was reported from a 18-year-old female who arrived from Dubai on Fly Dubai after traveling from Riyadh.
All three individuals have been admitted to the Sindh government’s Infectious Diseases Hospital, where they are currently in isolation while awaiting test results.
World Health Organization (WHO) approved first monkeypox vaccine, MVA-BN. The vaccine, recommended for adults aged 18 and older, is administered in two doses spaced four weeks apart. It has shown a 76% effectiveness rate after the first dose and an 82% effectiveness rate after the second dose.
WHO has declared monkeypox a public health emergency, heightening global awareness and response to the virus.
