LAHORE – A Joint Investigation Team would be looking into the incident related to the firing at the Model Town Lahore residence of Supreme Court judge Ijazul Ahsan.
According to a spokesperson for the Government of Punjab, the JIT will be headed by Additional Inspector-General (AIG) of police Muhammad Tahir, and will comprise Sultan Chaudhry, the deputy inspector-general for investigation, alongside representatives from the Military Intelligence (MI), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to track the unknown suspects who targeted the residence, close to the house of Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif, twice over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the case of the attack on the apex court judge’s residence has been lodged against unidentified persons in Model Town Police Station and provisions of terrorism and attempted murder have been included in the case.
The first firing incident occurred at 10:45 pm Saturday night and the second one at 9:10 am on Sunday morning but fortunately, no casualties were reported in the attacks.
Ahsan was a member of the bench which heard high profile Panamagate case against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and ultimately disqualified him.
Ahsan was also among the judges who announced the verdict in disqualification period case this week. The court had unanimously announced that the disqualification under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution was for a lifetime, sealing the political career of former Premier Nawaz Sharif and PTI’s former Secretary General Jahangir Tareen for life.
He is also the monitoring judge in the corruption cases being heard by an accountability court against the members of the Sharif family.
Ahsan was appointed as the judge of Pakistan’s top court in June 2016. He had taken oath as the new chief justice of Lahore High Court (LHC) in November 2015.
