LAHORE (Staff Report) – After getting huge success in curtailing terrorism throughout the country, Pakistan Army now vowed to defeat natural disasters by plant trees to ensure green environment.
In this regard, the troops initiated a `Go Green Week’ in Lahore Garrison as part of the Spring Tree Plantation Campaign.
According to Inter Services Public Relations on Wednesday, more than 60,000 saplings of both shady and fruit trees will be planted by troops in Lahore and Walton Cantonment,Chunian Cantonment including forward areas.
Commander Lahore Corps Lieutenant General Sadiq Ali visited various military formations and Garrison schools and planted saplings to promote the ongoing afforestation drive. The aim of week long Spring Tree Plantation Campaign from March 12 to 18 is to make the environment even more healthy and greener towards a visible impact on natural surroundings.
In order to boost the plantation drive,arrangements have been made through mobile nurseries to deliver plant saplings of choice to the residents of Cantonment.
The emphasis of the campaign in current season is to ensure survival and quality rather than quantity of saplings planted. Wooden plates are being installed alongside all plants bearing name of the person who planted the sapling, to install a sense of ownership and responsibility.
The Armed Forces of Pakistan and the Cantonment Boards have remained the torch bearers of this healthy tradition and continue to religiously undertake tree plantation campaigns in their area of responsibility,stated the release.
The long queues of tall and shady trees all over the Lahore Cantonment bear testimony to the fact that Pakistan Army has made invaluable contributions towards environmental upgradation in the country.
Pakistan currently has a 4.8 per cent land-to-forest ratio, which is very little as we need to achieve at least 12 per cent to have ample greenery and oxygen.
