Heavy rain kills seven in KP, destroys 35,000 acres of wheat, crop in Punjab

PESHAWAR/LAHORE –Rain-related incidents killed at least seven people and injured another seven early Thursday morning, the Radio Pakistan reported.

According to details, three persons died in Tangi area of Charsadda and three in Inayat Kally of Bajaur district. Similarly, one person died in Parachinar, the Headquarters of Kurram district.

Meanwhile, Punjab Agriculture Minister Malik Nauman Ahmad Langrial said that 35,000 acres of wheat and corn crop have been destroyed during the recent spell of rains and hailstorm.

The minister informed that the government will conduct an assessment pertaining to the damages caused to the crops and losses suffered by farmers due to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Punjab chief minister Usman Buzdar has summoned a cabinet meeting to discuss the damages to the fields by the rains.

The hailstorm in Multan, which lasted 15 minutes devastated ready to harvest the crop of wheat, corn and vegetable fields. Farmers, across the province, have demanded that the government should announce an aid package to provide them with relief following the loss caused by the rains.

At least 31 villages have been affected and 9,000 acres of the wheat crop destroyed after heavy rains on Koh-e-Suleman mountain areas of Rajanpur.

MET predicts more rains in upper Punjab and KP

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department in its forecast has predicted more rain in the country’s different part including upper Punjab and KP.

According to the MET office, rain and thunderstorm could hit parts of upper Punjab, KP and Federal capital during next 24 hours.

The met office stated rains and high-velocity winds are expected to hit scattered places in upper Punjab divisions of Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad and Sahiwal. Similarly, rains and winds are expected KP divisions of Malakand, Hazara, Mardan, Kohat and Peshawar divisions. Rains, winds and cloudy weather are predicted for Islamabad, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan.

The Met Office also predicted dry weather for Balochistan, Sindh and southern Punjab.
