ISLAMABAD – Keeping in view the demand of opposition parties for a high-level probe into alleged rigging during general elections, the federal government on Tuesday took a crucial step for the formation of a parliamentary body.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi during the National Assembly session under Speaker Adas Qaiser tabled a resolution seeking an investigation into the alleged election rigging.

After the results of the general elections were announced, the united opposition alliance, comprising Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and others, cried foul and demanded investigations.

Addressing the session where Prime Minister Imran Khan is also present, Qureshi said that they did not want to keep anything secret, adding that no compromise will be made on transparency.

Explaining the formation of the probe body, the foreign minister said that equal representation will be given to the opposition, adding that the chairman of the committee will be from government benches.

PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal expressing his views said that the proposed committee should be fully empowered to probe the alleged poll rigging.

Qureshi responded that the committee will provide terms of references (TORs) to conduct an investigation into the alleged poll rigging, adding that it will be fully empowered.

Pakistan Peoples Party leader Shazia Murree demanded the appointment of parliamentary committee head from the opposition benches, adding that there should be equal representation of opposition and the government in the committee.

Information Minister Fawad Chauhdry said that the parliamentary body will be fully empowered, adding that reservations of the opposition will be addressed.

He recalled that PTI struggled for four years for such committee which is being formed by the government on the orders of the Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Speaker Asad Qaiser vowed to set up a committee to probe the allegations in line with the set rules.
