Pakistan’s inaugural multi-mission satellite, PakSat-MM1, has officially commenced operations following successful testing. This landmark satellite is the first in the country to offer broadband services, marking a significant advancement in Pakistan’s space capabilities.
Shaza Fatima, Minister of State for Information Technology, announced that Pakistan has established its first National Space Policy. She highlighted the importance of PakSat-MM1 under this policy, noting its potential to transform connectivity in remote and underserved areas.
Fatima stressed that the satellite will address the challenge of internet access in rural regions, where traditional infrastructure development has been difficult. She also emphasized that digitalizing education and healthcare could lead to revolutionary changes in Pakistan.
SUPARCO Chairman Yusuf Khan and PakSat CEO Khalid Rashid both praised the satellite’s capabilities. They explained that PakSat-MM1 will provide essential services such as broadband, telecommunications, and data internet. The satellite is expected to enhance digital connectivity, especially in remote areas, and improve overall internet speeds across the country. Additionally, PakSat-MM1 will offer 5G coverage, addressing the high costs and complexities of developing telecom infrastructure in underserved regions.
Khan and Rashid noted that satellite internet is a critical communication tool globally. They also highlighted the economic potential of integrating remote areas into the digital economy, projecting that this could boost Pakistan’s GDP by up to 2.5%. PakSat-MM1 represents a major step forward in bridging connectivity gaps and supporting Pakistan’s digital transformation.
