Govt to announce special relief package to farmers affected by rains

ISLAMABAD – Minister for National Food Security Sahibzada Mehboob Sultan said that a special relief package will soon be announced for the farmers whose crops were damaged in recent rains, the Radio Pakistan reported.

In a statement, he said that the government is doing its best to estimate the damages to the crops as well as human losses in the rains at the earliest.

The minister said he will visit the affected areas to meet the affected farmers and monitor the situation on ground.

He said the damage caused to standing crops due to heavy rains is moderate and there is no likelihood of food insecurity or emergency situation thereof.

Mehboob Sultan said that the MET department has been directed to remain vigilant and maintain liaison with provincial agriculture departments for timely weather forecast.

Earlier, farmers have demanded that the government should announce an aid package to provide them with relief following the loss caused by the recent spell of heavy rains.

Earlier, Punjab Agriculture Minister Malik Nauman Ahmad Langrial had informed that 35,000 acres of wheat and corn crop have been destroyed during the recent spell of rains and hailstorm.

The minister informed that the government will conduct an assessment pertaining to the damages caused to the crops and losses suffered by farmers due to heavy rains.

The hailstorm in Multan, which lasted 15 minutes devastated ready to harvest the crop of wheat, corn and vegetable fields.

At least 31 villages have been affected and 9,000 acres of the wheat crop destroyed after heavy rains on Koh-e-Suleman mountain areas of Rajanpur.
