Man handed death penalty for blasphemy in Lahore

LAHORE – A man has been sentenced to death under Section 295C after being found guilty of blasphemy by a sessions court in the Punjab capital city.

Saleem was booked in 2016 for making blasphemous remarks in a public place in the Lohari Gate area.

The court also told him to pay Rs200,000 in fine as well.

Six of 12 witnesses recorded testimonies against Saleem via videolink due to security concerns, Deputy Prosecutor General Muhammad Amjad was quoted by local media as saying.

The accused remained in Camp Jail during the trial.

In Muslim-majority Pakistan, the blasphemy law prescribes a death sentence for anyone convicted of insulting Islam or the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
