LAHORE – The Supreme Court on Tuesday summoned details about the appointment of Tariq Bajwa as governor of the State Bank of Pakistan from the federal government.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar issued the orders while hearing a petition at apex court’s Lahore Registry.
The petition was filed by Senator Taj Haider of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) stating that Bajwa was appointed at the central bank without adopting the set procedure.
The SBP chief was assigned the job by violating the merit requirements, Haider alleged, besides requesting the court to annul the appointment.
On July 17, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared the appointment of Bajwa as per law after rejecting a plea filed by 22 senators mostly from the PPP and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
During the hearing today, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb rejected the reservations raised by the lawmakers.
On August 16, 2017, 22 senators, including PPP’s Taj Haider, Farhatullah Babar, Sassi Palejo and Farooq H Naik, had moved the high court against Bajwa.
Bajwa was appointed SBP governor in July 2017 after Ashraf Mehmood Wathra completed his three-year term.
