Tortured maid Tayyaba s trial to be held in Islamabad High Court

ISLAMABAD – Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday decided to contiue hearing Tayyaba torture case while dismissing civil society’s plea seeking transfer of case at native province’s local court.

Human rights activist and lawyer Asma Jahangir, on behalf of the civil society, had filed two petitions seeking the transfer of the case to a district court and to become a party in the case. However, the court turned down both the applications.

According to the details, Justice Amir Farooq said that the issue pertaining to torture on a 10-year-old maid by owners additional judge Raja Khurram and his wife Maheen Zafar would not be sent to subordinate court as IHC is authorized to hear it as per law.

Victim’s lawyer argued that IHC’s verdict would be affected by accused Raja Khurram. Subsequently, the court rejected the appeal and decided to hear the case by itself.

The 10-year-old tortured child maid Tayyaba was recovered from the sessions court judge’s residence in Islamabad early this year. The Supreme Court took suo moto notice of the case on media reports, and later transferred the case to the trial court.

The affluent Khan and his wife were booked after the 10-year-old Tayyaba recorded her shocking statement regarding the brutal torture before the police in the presence of Assistant Commissioner Potohar Nisha Ishtiaq.
