Choosing cheaper option for transmitting poll results causes ECP system debacle, claims IT firm

ISLAMABAD – The outcome of the results of general polls were slowed down last night after Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) Result Transfer System (RTS) crashed, raising eyebrows over the transparency of the elections.

The RTS is an online software, which was developed to transfer the votes’ counting from polling stations to the election headquarters. But it went down after results started pouring in from across the country apparently due to its poor design.

As the technical glitches surfaced, the ECP has to shift to the manual system as it directed the polling staff to submit the results to district control rooms manually. The political parties also started slamming the electoral body for its failure and levelled allegations of poll rigging.

However, a managing director of an IT company has come up with stunning reasons behind the system crash. A social media user has shared the post of the MD of Rapid Compute, Cybernet’s Data Center and Cloud arm, explaining the ECP systems debacle.

He raised objection over the government tender and procurement process to avail the IT services for country’s General Elections.

He wrote, “The ECP system that went down last night delaying voter tally was offered to be hosted by us (RapidCompute) and another local ISP. The local ISP quoted 1/10th our cost even though we protested that the amount of compute muscle required by the system as clarified by the system architect is impossible to meet at such low a cost”.

However, the ECP ignored the Rapid Compute’s reservation, leading to the last night debacle. He criticised the procurement process as saying, “Our never-ending search for the cheaper option in the public and private sector has rarely paid dividends yet it continues. Selection on merit , experience and ability is the norm worldwide and should be here as well!”.

As Pakistan concluded its 11th General Elections on Wednesday, with a single massive incident of violence, the vote counting is portraying PTI in a favorable light with Imran Khan visibly assuming the prime ministership of the country in just a few days.

Khan’s party, founded some 22 years ago, has managed to bag 118 seats of the National Assembly according to unofficial results in the fraught elections that pitched him against the all-powerful Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz and Pakistan Peoples Party.
