ISLAMABAD – Admitting flaws in National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has announced the decision to make an 18-member committee consisting of representatives of political parties to streamline process regarding verification, cancellation and restoration of Pakistani identity cards.
Slamming the black sheep in NADRA, the interior minister while addressing a press conference said such elements will be dealt with strictly, adding that institutions should not be defamed for political interests.
Chaudhry Nisar highlighted the fact that former governments had issued passports and identity cards to foreigners, which were used in human smuggling. He further said that recovery of Pakistani identity cards from possession of terrorists defamed the country internationally.
Nisar Ali Khan revealed that Afghan Taliban former chief Mullah Mansoor was issued a Pakistani identity card in 2005.
The incumbent government took stern action against the fake computerised national identity cards (CNICs) and passports, he said, adding that 32,400 passports were cancelled and 22,3000 CNICs blocked during last three years. However, the previous governments merely cancelled 500 passports.
“Besides this, around 95 million unregistered mobile SIM cards were blocked in just 90 days,” he added.
The interior minister also said the Federal Investigation Agency had been actively investigating a matter pertaining to a fake picture being circulated across social networking sites.
He further stated that two more committees were being formed to investigate the Axact and Khanani and Kalia money laundering case, adding that much of the record in Khanani and Kalia case had been lost.
