MANSEHRA – Army has rescued two Spanish climbers from K2 base under extreme harsh weather condition, the Radio Pakistan reported.
The rescued mountaineers, Jon Barredo and Eva Robles, thanked armed forces of Pakistan for saving their lives.
K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen or Chhogori, at 8,611 metres above sea level, is the second highest mountain in the world, after Mount Everest, at 8,848 metres.
Located in the Karakorum Mountains along the border between China and Pakistan, K-2 is notorious for high winds, steep and icy slopes – and high fatality rates for climbers.
At least 70 people had died by 2017 climbing the peak.
Pakistan is a hot destination for climbers. It rivals Nepal for the number of peaks over 7,000 metres (22,966 feet) and in all, it has five of the world’s 14 summits higher than 8,000 meters.
Last year, the Pakistan Army had rescued a Russian climber from Karakoram range peak in the northern part of the country.
