Improvement in judicial system not on parliament s priority list: CJP

ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khan Khosa termed it as an unfortunate situation that the improvement of the judicial system was not on the parliament’s priority list as recommendations and amendments were not tabled in the parliament in this regard.

Addressing a conference in Islamabad today (Saturday), the CJP said that the initiative of model courts has been taken in order to ensure delivery of expeditious justice to the people.

He said that it is the responsibility of every organ of the state to work towards the provision of speedy and inexpensive justice to the masses.

He maintained that every possible effort was being made to adjudicate pending cases as soon as possible. “Police must immediately investigate a case, and submit its challan, he added.

The chief justice said that we have tried to impress upon the IGPs to ensure that investigations are completed within the given time frame and then challans are timely presented before the courts.

Appreciating the performance of judges of model courts, he said the model trial courts will not grant adjournments in order to ensure timely conclusion of cases.

Asif Saeed Khan Khosa said that the parliament and the executive should also work towards bringing improvement in the justice system.

He said there are certain laws which need to be revisited including anti-terrorism act. He revealed that in the last year, the apex court has announced judgments in 26,000 cases.
