Earthquake caused cracks in two glaciers in Hunza valley

HUNZA (Staff Report) – Due to Monday’s 7.5 magnitude strong earthquake two major glaciers in Karakorum area have received serious cracks, triggering further devastation in Pakistan’s Hunza valley.

Local officials of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have warned if cracks continue expanding to other glaciers, they may creat a flood-like situation in coming weeks.

These cracked glaciers remain vulnerable to earthquake aftershocks and can become a serious threat in the future.

Meanwhile the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Pakistan suggested that more lakes might be formed in Hunza valley if these glaciers start melting in coming weeks.
