ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) number two leader Muhammad Anwar tasked us to kill senior party leader Imran Farooq on the directions of Altaf Hussain in 2010, two of the three assassins in FIA said in their confessional statements with local magistrate in Islamabad.
Both accused, Mohsin Ali and Khalid Shamim, recorded confessional statements with magistrate Captain (r) Muhammad Shoaib under the section 164 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), while third suspect Moazzam Ali refused to confess to the crime.
On the occasion suspects also told magistrate that they were recording the statements on their personal will and without any pressure of FIA or other authority.
Now the statements have a legal status and can be used against other co-accused which also includes MQM chief Altaf Hussain along with Muhammad Anwar, Iftikhar Hussain and Kashif Khan Kamran.
The case was filed by Federal Investigation Authority’s (FIA) counter-terrorism wing in Islamabad under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
Dr Farooq, a prominent member of the MQM was murdered in 2010 outside his residence in London as a result of multiple stabs and a blow to his head.
The former MQM leader was twice elected an MP in Pakistan, but went into hiding in 1992 when the government ordered a military crackdown against party activists in Karachi. He later claimed asylum in Britain in 1999.
In September, MQM’s Mohsin Ali confessed to Scotland Yard investigators of being involved in the brutal murder of Dr Imran Farooq, the MQM’s founding leader, in London.
A three-member investigation team, comprising Scotland Yard’s senior officers, met Mohsin Ali – the prime suspect in Imran Farooq murder case – and conducted his interview.
