ISLAMABAD (APP) – The National Assembly of Pakistan has decided to launch its official social media accounts for wider parliamentary outreach to the public.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by National Assembly (NA) Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq at Parliament House, says a press release issued on Sunday.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq underlined the need to develop new strategies and policies to support effective engagement between the National Assembly and citizens of the country.
While emphasising the need for effective parliamentary outreach, the speaker highlighted that regular engagement with citizens is a pre-requisite for a stronger, vibrant and participatory democracy. In the contemporary world, traditional democracies are turning towards e-parliament and one of the main tools utilised to connect with the people is social media, he added.
Speaker termed social media an excellent platform for quick and direct engagement with the citizens of the country.
He directed the officers of the National Assembly Secretariat to develop a team of experts in managing NA’s social media pages.
The social media pages of the National Assembly would disseminate timely information to the national and international audience and the Parliament would receive feedback from the general public, he added
On this occasion, MNA Marriyum Aurangzeb remarked that institutional openness and transparency constituted a vibrant democracy.
She also highlighted that the primary objective of social media platform is to ensure National Assembly as an open, transparent, accountable and accessible democratic institution.
MNA Malik Muhammad Uzair Khan said that the presence of official account of National Assembly on social media would not only facilitate journalists in reporting on Parliament but also reach out more directly to the public and be able to react more quickly to news and events.
As directed by Speaker, media wing of National Assembly has been running its social media pages at Facebook and Twitter.
