LAHORE (Staff Report) – WWF-Pakistan celebrated Earth Hour across the country here on Saturday. The main event was organised at Qarshi University Lahore and Frere Hall in Karachi. Hundreds of people were attended the event.
Earth Hour observed from 0830 to 0930 pm by switching off unnecessary lights with the theme ‘Change Climate Change.’
Lights remained switched off at The National Assembly of Pakistan, all Provincial Assemblies and other significant buildings across the country as part of a symbolic gesture to be part of a global moment of solidarity for climate action.
This year’s Earth Hour ambassadors included Anoushey Ashraf, Hassan Ahmed, Amna Kardar, Uzair Jaswal, and Sajid Hasan. Muniba Mazari was also present at the event in Lahore as a supporter.
Hammad Naqi Khan, Director General, WWF-Pakistan said: “Pakistan is among the top ten countries affected by climate change and this environmental challenge is already severely impacting our economy”, he observed.
In his message, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the world is experiencing diverse impacts of climate change and it is important to empower people to become part of climate change initiatives.
He remarked that in pursuant of reducing emissions, the parliament of Pakistan became the first ever parliament completely powered by solar energy.
CM Punjab Shahbaz Shariff said that the aim of observing this day was to promote a friendly attitude among the people towards environment. He said that world was passing through a critical era regarding environment.
Iqbal Ahmed Qarshi, CEO, Qarshi said: “Qarshi Industries in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan organises Earth Hour which is the momentum of the world’s largest grass roots movement and it calls for united efforts under the broader spectrum of climate”.
