ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday temporarily banned Aamir Liaquat Hussain’s programme ‘Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga’ on Bol News.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice Amir Hani Muslim issued a warning stating if the channel’s management continues airing the programme, the bench will initiate contempt of court proceedings against the channel and the anchor Amir Liaquat.
On Tuesday last week the SC also scrapped a contempt notice issued to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) chairman Absar Alam.
The orders were issued in an appeal filed by Pemra against an order of SHC which granted stay to Labbaik Private Limited against Pemra’s order of prohibiting Aamir Liaquat from airing show until the decision of Councils of Complaints.
Eminent lawyers Zahid Kakharuddin and Kashif Hanif represented Pemra in the case. Earlier last month the media watchdog had banned Aamir from appearing on any TV show for allegedly spreading hate, but Aamir got relief from the Sindh High Court.
With today’s decision, the televangelist would not be able to appear on television screen till any further order by the apex court.
The hearing of the case has been adjourned till Wednesday.
Meanwhile, talking to newsmen after the verdict, Pemra chairman Absar Alam expressed that the regulatory authority would take strict action regarding hate speech.
