ISLAMABAD – Condemning the violence against Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar, Pakistan’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai has urged her fellow laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to denounce the inhumane treatment in her country.
Malala Yousafzai took to Twitter on Sunday following the news of upsurge violence in the Southeast Asian country where ethnic attacks claimed over 400 lives, besides forcing Muslim minority to flee towards Bangladesh.
In her tweet, she said: “Every time I see the news, my heart breaks at the suffering of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar”.
Calling for ending the violence, she questioned: “If there home is not Myanmar, where they have lived for generation, the where is it?”
Rohingya people should be given citizenship in Myanmar, the country where they were born, Yousafzai added,
She also urged other countries including Pakistan “to follow Bangladesh’ example and give food, shelter and access to education to Rohingya families fleeing violence and terror”.
Malala said she have repeatedly condemned “tragic and shameful treatment,” adding, “I am still waiting for my fellow Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same”.
“The world is waiting and the Rohingya Muslims are waiting [for Suu Kyi to condemn the violence],” the girls’ education advocate tweeted.
Suu Kyi was awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and is known worldwide for her decades-long struggle for democracy in her country.
The violence that forces nearly 90,000 Muslims to leave their homes and to go to Bangladesh is the biggest challenge for Aung San Suu Kyi, accused by Western critics of not raising voice for the persecuted minority.
