ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the deadline for an accountability court, hearing corruption cases against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and family members, to conclude the cases.
The apex court has granted two months extension to the trial court for the corruption trial as the previous deadline is going to expire on March 13.
Following the Panamagate verdict, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed four references against members of Sharif family and former finance minister Ishaq Dar. The apex court had directed the NAB to decide the references within six months.
The NAB had filed three interim corruption references against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his children – Hasan, Hussain and Maryam Nawaz – and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar in light of the Supreme Court’s July 28 verdict in the Panama Papers case.
The anti-graft watchdog recently filed supplementary references in all three cases – Avenfiled properties, Al-Azizia Steel Mills, Flagship Investment and other offshore companies.
Sharif’s sons -Hassan and Hussain – have also been named as accused in the references, however, due to continued absence both have been declared proclaimed offenders.
A reference has been filed against Ishaq Dar for possessing assets beyond known sources of income.
The Supreme Court has granted three more months to the accountability court to conclude the case of former finance minister.

Earlier today, the law secretary informed the court that tenure of Judge Mohammad Bashir will be extended on the request of the Islamabad High Court. He said that the ministry concerned has approved the summary for extension and now it has been sent to the prime minister for approval.
