PML-N terms lifetime disqualification of Nawaz Sharif a conspiracy

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Muslim league Nawaz took a strong exception to the verdict of the supreme court in the ‘disqualification tenure’ on Friday, terming it a joke and conspiracy.

Shortly after the apex court announced that the disqualification under Article 62 (1)(f) would be for life – sealing the political career of former premier Nawaz Sharif and PTI’s Jahangir Tareen –  State Minister for Information Maryam Aurangzeb termed the verdict a joke that ‘has already been played on previous prime ministers’.

“This is the same kind of decision that led to the hanging of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and then to the disqualification of an elected prime minister while referring to Nawaz Sharif,” claimed Aurangzeb.

The legislator continued that this decision was the result of a conspiracy by ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.

The legislator claimed that corruption of not a single penny was proven against the former premier adding that Panama JIT head Wajid Zia had also said there was no documental evidence to show that Nawaz took money from his son’s company, Capital FZE.

The minister decried that nameless, faceless people decided the fate of premiers as prime minister, then removed him as head of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), barred his party from participating in Senate elections and now they ruled against him from holding a public office for life.

“A prime minister who weeded out terrorism and load-shedding from the country has been disqualified for life,” added the minister.

Let it be known that a five-member bench of the top court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah voted 5-0 in favour of lifetime disqualification, though the proposal before the apex court was to reduce the embargo for 8 years.

The top court had reserved the verdict after hearings on February 14th after clubbing as many as 17 petitions.

With Friday’s verdict, both Nawaz Sharif and Jahangir Tareen have been declared ineligible to contest general elections.
