Cabinet allows open trial of Nawaz Sharif in corruption cases

ISLAMABAD – The interim federal cabinet on Wednesday reverted a previous order to conduct corruption trial of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif inside Adiala Jail.

The cabinet meter under the chair of caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retd) Nasir-ul-Mulk in Islamabad and took up the issue to reverse the notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

The meeting members decided that the trial of the former premier in the two remaining cases – Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, and offshore companies, including Flagship Investments – will be conducted in the accountability court.

Earlier today, the NAB court, which is awaiting Islamabad High Court order on Sharifs’ plea to transfer cases, adjourned the hearing of the cases until July 30.

The IHC has issued notices to the NAB on the appeals filed by the Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz, who are currently serving their term in the jail, against the Avenfield verdict.

Nawaz and Maryam were sent to jail last week upon their arrival from London following the verdict in the Avenfield case.
