Jan Mohammad retakes charge as IGP Islamabad

ISLAMABAD – Following his overnight transfer and then top court’s intervention, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Islamabad, Jan Muhammad, on Monday has again assumed charge of his post.

Muhammad, who was in Malaysia for a training course when the whole episode occurred following his abrupt transfer order, came back to Islamabad today night and he has resumed his duties.

After the Supreme Court suspended his transfer notification, the Ministry of Interior wrote to the IGP and directed him to assume the charge.

Earlier today, the apex court rejected a plea filed by the government for appointment of a new IGP Islamabad. Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had directed the government to appoint an interim inspector general.

On Oct 28, the inspector general of capital police was removed from the post for allegedly not receiving the phone call of a federal minister.

On Oct 29, the court took suo motu notice and suspended the notification of his transfer. “We cannot tolerate political meddling in the police. Governance of law should be maintained and we will not let our institutions falter,” Justice Nisar said, adding that there was also a transfer in Punjab and this transfer happened within a matter of days.

Following the court orders, the IG of capital police Jan Muhammad was reinstated on Oct 30. All this occurred when the said police officer was not present in the country.
