ISLAMABAD — A shocking cyberfraud case has come to light, revealing how scammers are exploiting Pakistani travelers amid ongoing Middle East tensions.
The passenger fell victim after exploring airline ticket prices for international flights. While reviewing options, she received WhatsApp message and file from number displaying PIA logo, claiming she had been selected for a special discount on international flights.
She downloaded and opened the file, only to find her mobile phone instantly seized by hackers. Within moments, over Rs7,000 were stolen from her Easypaisa account.
The current geopolitical situation is not only disrupting flight schedules but also creating opportunities for scammers to target desperate passengers. These cybercriminals impersonate airlines, especially PIA, sending fake messages to lure citizens into their traps.
PIA made it clear that the organization does not send such offers via phone calls or messages, nor does it request personal information. Passengers should rely solely on official PIA websites and authorized channels for discounts.
Cybercriminals constantly adapt their tactics to maximize number of victims. In these cases, hackers contact individuals, claiming they applied for a discounted ticket and are now eligible for a special offer. To claim it, they are instructed to install an application and input personal data.
Passengers are advised to always follow official airline procedures and avoid downloading unknown files, links, or applications or providing personal information to unverified sources.
