ISLAMABAD – While the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is still mulling to take the matter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s eligibility in office to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president has claimed that the apex court is not the correct forum for such a case.
SCBA president Ali Zafar was quoted by The Express Tribune on Monday as saying that the Supreme Court could not hear a petition filed for disqualification of the Prime Minister under Article 184(3) of the constitution.
“The allegation that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif owns offshore companies and that he moved his assets abroad by unfair means requires strong evidence,” he added.
He went on to say that the Prime Minister’s disqualification was only possible if an inquiry commission held that he was involved in illegal activities after recording of relevant evidence.
On the occasion, Mr Ali Zafar also termed the disqualifications of certain lawmakers by former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as illegal and unfair. The incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan is a person of the different sort and he will decide the cases in the light of laws, he added.
