Du Plessi s ton gives South Africa 205-run lead over Pakistan in second test

CAPE TOWN – South Africa were 382-6 (116 Overs) at the end of second day of the second test against Pakistan on Friday.

Captain Faf du Plessis batted almost the entire day for his 103 as South Africa gained a 205-run lead against Pakistan.

Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma both made half-centuries Friday to give Proteas a commanding 147-run lead over Pakistan after the lunch.

Du Plessis was 80 not out and Bavuma 60 not out to put South Africa in prime position to win the match and the series as it went to tea on 281-4 in its first innings.

On Thursday, South Africa closed the opening day of the second Test against Pakistan on 2-123 – 54 runs behind Pakistan who were dismissed for 177 in Cape Town.

Opener Aiden Markram made a return to form as he scored 78 to help South Africa into a strong position on the opening day of the second Test against Pakistan at Newlands.

Markram, who struggled on tour in Sri Lanka in July and in the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan, was bowled on the last ball of the day by Shan Masood.

Earlier, Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed hit a spirited half-century but could not prevent South Africa’s fast bowlers taking control on the opening day of the second Test at Newlands.

Duanne Olivier followed up a match-winning performance in the first Test in Centurion by taking four for 48, while Dale Steyn took three for 48.

Sarfraz hit nine fours in an 81-ball innings while Shan Masood, who went out for 44, offered some resistance in a 60-run partnership after lunch before the 26-year-old Oliver restored the home team’s dominance.

Pakistan were nine wickets down at the scheduled tea break, which was delayed by 14 minutes until the last wicket fell.

Opener Imam-ul- Haq scored eight and Fakhar Zaman one. Similarly, middle order line up also failed to pile up a good score on the board. Azhar made two, Asad Shafiq 20, and Babar Azam only manage to score two after asked them to bat first.

The hosts won the first Test in Pretoria by six wickets inside eight sessions as both bowling attacks found conditions to their liking with seam movement, and at times steep bounce.

Pakistan are bolstered by the return of pacer Mohammad Abbas, who missed the first Test with a shoulder injury.

He has made a remarkable start to his Test career with 61 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 16.62.

Seamer Vernon Philander is back for South Africa. He has 49 wickets at an average of 16.55 at Newlands.

South Africa have won all three previous Tests against Pakistan at Newlands and have only lost four times in 24 matches against the sub-continent side at all venues.
