Pakistani man freed from Indian jail after 16 years

NEW DELHI – India has released a Pakistani national imprisoned in Varanasi Central Jail after 16 years and will be handed over to Pakistan at Wagah-Attari border.

Senior Superintendent of the central jail Ambrish Gaud said that Jalaluddin was arrested from Varanasi’s cantonment area in 2001. He was later sentenced to 16 years in jail.

“He was imprisoned under the Official Secrets Act and Foreigner’s Act. He has been handed over to the local police,” the officer said, adding that the released man also took home with him a Hindu scripture written in Sanskrit.

“When he was arrested, he had only graduated from high school. He completed his intermediate and did his MA from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He also undertook an electrician course as well in the jail. He had been an umpire in the jail cricket leagues for the last three years,” he added.

Jalaluddin will be brought to Amritsar by a special team where he will be handed over to Pakistani authorities at the border.
