Suleman Shehbaz eyes entry into electoral politics

LAHORE – Suleman Shehbaz, the younger son of Shehbaz Sharif has expressed his desire within the family circles to contest the forthcoming elections scheduled on July 25.

According to well-placed sources, Suleman has shown his interest in taking part in the general election from the seats (NA-129 and PP-161); Shehbaz Sharif had trounced rivals from these seats in the 2013 polls.

Despite Suleman’s desire, a final decision regarding contesting the elections will be taken by the supreme leader of ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, Dawn News reported.

Salman’s elder brother Hamza is already active in mainstream politics ever since the Sharif family was in exile after the bloodless coup of General Musharraf.

Hamza is considered a gunslinger when it comes to the politics of Punjab and is dubbed “deputy chief minister” whenever his father is at the helm of affairs in the province.

During the last stint of PML-N, Hamza chaired meetings at the 90-The Mall offices of the CM and is also a strategist for all the by-polls, except the NA-120 (Lahore) where his cousin Maryam Nawaz spearheaded the campaign and emerged as victorious, though Kulsoom Nawaz did not take an oath of the office.

Maryam is also considering running for the NA-125 (the former NA-120 seat) or NA-127.
