Nawaz to return to Kot Lakhpat jail today after six-week bail expires

LAHORE – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to hand himself over to the Kot Lakhpat Jail authorities in Lahore today (Tuesday), in form of the rally after the expiry of six-week bail in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference.

Nawaz Sharif will leave Jati Umra for Kot Lakhpat Jail after Ifta, while his daughter and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz will be accompanying him and lead the rally, as per the decision made by the party’s central executive committee.

Maryam Nawaz wrote on Twitter that it is difficult to go with your beloved father in jail but she will go because the purpose is great.

There would be 10 camps to show solidarity with Nawaz Sharif who will be travelling through Jati Umra, Ada plot, Ring Road to Kot Lakhpat Jail. Before his departure to jail, the elder Sharif will visit the graveyard to pray for his father, wife and brother.

PML-N leader Asif Karmani expressed concerns over the health condition of Nawaz Sharif and said that his treatment was underway and the different test was conducted during parole period, adding that the treatment was not possible in Pakistan.

On the other hand, the jail authorities have said that receiving time of prisoners is till 6 o clock and after that, no prisoner can enter in jail.

The Supreme Court had on Friday rejected former prime minister Nawaz Sharif request seeking extension in his six-week bail on medical ground.

The apex court also rejected his plea seeking permission for treatment in the United Kingdom. The PML-N supremo who was handed seven years jail and Rs5 billion fine in Al-Azizia Steel Mill case in December 2018.

He was granted bail on March 26 by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The court had suspended the sentence of Nawaz in the Azizia Steel Mills case and granted him bail for six weeks.

His bail is expiring today (on May 7).

The court on his plea remarked that Nawaz Sharif was given six weeks for treatment, but it seemed he had spent the entire time in medical tests alone.

The ousted PM has filed the application for his bail extension in the apex court on April 30. His lawyer Khawaja Haris arguing in the court stated that Nawaz was facing complicated medical issues and the only option available to him was that he got treatment from those doctors who knew his medical history. The lawyer said that unforgivable damage will occur if the bail is not extended and he was allowed to go abroad for his treatment.

The apex court, however, turned down Nawaz plea and denied bail to him through a short order.
