LOS ANGELES (Web Desk) – A teenage American couple who were struck by lightning have said they have an “electric love” after holding hands left them unharmed.
California pair Dylan Corliss and Lexie Varga were walking down a tree-lined street in Claremont on their way to get a burger when a lightning bolt hit them during a thunderstorm the other day, the Mirror reported.
According to their doctor, holding hands made the difference in their survival, reports Fox 12 Oregon.
Their physician, Dr Stefan Reynoso of Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center’s satellite in Claremont, says their lives were probably spared because they were holding hands while walking.
Medic Stefan Reynoso said: “The chance of getting hit by lightning is very uncommon – perhaps one in a million.
“They were lucky they were holding hands. It helped diffuse that electrical current.”
“These two were lucky they that they were holding hands. It helped to diffuse the electrical current that ran through their bodies,” Reynoso said.
Reynoso suspects the bolt first hit Dylan’s head and traveled through his hands to hers and exited through Lexie’s foot.
“The chance of getting hit by lightning is very uncommon and perhaps one in a million,” the doctor said.
The couple were knocked to the floor, giving them a huge scare but no major injuries. Both now joke they have an “electric love.”
Dylan said: “It was more of shove and it felt like I was getting hit over the head with metal or something.”
“Next thing you know, we’re on the ground and we gave each other the most terrified looks,” Lexie added. “I kind of thought there was an earthquake.”
Lexie’s worried mother had heard the lightning and immediately text her daughter to check the couple was safe, but her daughter reassured her that she was alright.
According to their doctor, both teenagers are now fine.
