Neil Armstrong’s wife has said that she has found a host of mementos from the first moon landing in her husband’s closet while she was cleaning up the house.
Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon in 1969. He died in August 2012 and and his wife, Carol now found several objects linked to the historic lunar expedition at their home in Cincinnati, Ohio. These objects include a 16mm camera that was attached on the window of the Eagle lunar module to record the historic landing and Armstrong’s message when he landed on the surface.
She also found one of two waist tethers that was used to support Armstrong during the single rest period on the moon. She said that the mementos were put in a white cloth bag that may have come from a spacecraft. The items were supposed to be left behind on the moon and it appears that they were preserved.
Allan Needell, of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington said, “Needless to say, for a curator of a collection of space artifacts, it is hard to imagine anything more exciting.” The items were gifted to the museum after she found them in the house.
