ISLAMABAD – In a historic development in country’s democratic process, the members-elect of the lower house of the parliament took oath on Monday in the inaugural session of the National Assembly on Monday.
Outgoing NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath to the MNAs-elect in the landmark session for the 15 National Assembly.
Prime minister-in-waiting and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan and other prominent political leaders, including PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, also sworn in during the session.
After administering the oath to the MNAs, the speaker adjourned the NA session until August 15, when the elections for new speaker and deputy speaker of the assembly will be held. The nomination papers for the same will be submitted on Tuesday.

The session was held in peaceful environment, scrapping the speculations that united opposition will disrupt the process amid allegations of rigging in the recently held general elections.
The inaugural sessions of Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan assemblies were also held today where the newly elected members of the provincial assemblies took oath of their offices.
They will also elect Speakers, Deputy Speakers and Leaders of the House.
Meanwhile, governor Punjab has summoned first session of the provincial assembly on August 15 (Wednesday) at 10.00 am.
The first session will have two important activities in the ongoing week that will take place in two phases. In the first phase, speaker and deputy speaker of the house will be elected on August 15 (Wednesday).
The election for the leader of the house or prime minister is likely to be held on August 16 or August 17.
Constitutionally, Ayaz Sadiq is still speaker of the lower house until the selection of his successor. Then, the new speaker will take the charge and hold the election process for the deputy speaker. The election of both seats would be carried out through secret balloting.
PTI emerges as largest party in NA with 158 seats
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has emerged as the largest party in National Assembly with 158 seats after the inclusion of reserved seats for women and minorities.
It is followed by Pakistan Muslim League-N with 82 seats.
Pakistan Peoples Party is on third number with 53 seats.
Meanwhile, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal has 15 seats, Balochistan Awami Party 5 and Balochistan National Party 4 seats.
