RIYADH (Web Desk) – Following the historic local bodies polls in Saudi Arabia where women not only voted but also contested for the first time, Salma bint Hizab al-Oteibi has appeared as a winning candidate on a seat of Makkah’s municipal council.
According to the Kingdom’s official news agency SPA, election commission president Osama al-Bar Sunday announced the victory al-Oteibi in Madrakah area of the holy city.

The report added that she was running against seven men and two women in the constituency.

In the landmark Saudi polls, although the women candidates were not allowed to directly meet male voters during the electioneering but still out of total 6,440 candidates more than 900 were women contestants.
The election staff also said that they witnessed very low turn out of female voters in the election, hence it is expected that only few women contestants would feature as winners.
