Nawaz Sharif granted one-day exemption in Flagship Investment reference

ISLAMABAD – The accountability court in Islamabad has granted the former premier Nawaz Sharif one-day exemption regarding physical appearance in the Flagship Investment reference.

The supreme leader of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz had submitted a plea before the judge Arshad Malik, which was approved on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Wajid Zia, the head of six-men Joint Investigation Team (JIT) would continue recording his statement in the reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

After the completion of the statement, the counsel for Nawaz Sharif, Khawaja Haris would start cross-examination.

Zia, who was tasked to probe the offshore dealings of the former ruling family, presented the financial statement of the Flagship Investment Limited spanning from 2002 to 2016.

The Additional Director General of FIA also presented the letter forwarded by the Qatari prince, Hammad bin Jasim to the JIT on July 6, 2017 and an e-mail received by the foreign office of Pakistan.

The transmission and delivery report of the communication between JIT and Qatari prince was also presented before the judge during an earlier hearing.

As many as three references were filed against the members of the former ruling family in line with the directives issued by the apex court in the Panama Papers case.

Nawaz Sharif and his sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references – Hill Metal establishment, London flats and offshore firms – whereas his daughter Maryam and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar are convicted in the Avenfield reference only.

Hussain and Hassan Nawaz are UK-based and have been absconding since the proceedings began last year, however, the former premier has been showing up regularly before the court.
