Saudi-Iran tensions: PM Nawaz, Raheel Sharif arrive in Tehran
TEHRAN (Staff Report) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif Tuesday arrived in Tehran, in a bid to defuse tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

A top level delegation comprising of advisers and military officials was also accompanying them.

Upon their arrival at Tehran International Airport the premier was warmly greeted by Iranian Defence Minister and other top officials.

During the visit, both leaders would hold a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Earlier, the Prime Minister and the Army Chief General Raheel Sharif along with a delegation visited Saudi Arabia on Monday and met King Salman bin Abdul Aziz.

The Prime Minister expressed deep concern over recent escalation of tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. He called for resolution of differences through peaceful means in larger interest of Ummah, particularly during these challenging times.

The Prime Minister recalled Pakistan's consistent policy of promoting brotherhood among member states of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation.

The Prime Minister said that Pakistan always expressed readiness to offer its good offices to brotherly Muslim countries, for resolution of their differences through dialogue and reconciliation.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on various facets of enduring cooperation with regard to Saudi initiative of formation of the coalition of Islamic countries against terrorism.

Pakistan deeply appreciated the Saudi initiative and assured Saudi Arabia of its support.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the people of Pakistan would always stand with the people of Saudi Arabia against any threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

After conclusion of the visit to Iran, the prime minister will visit Zurich, Switzerland to represent Pakistan at the World Economic Forum at Davos.
