Pakistani Woman Sentenced To Death For Blasphemy On Social Media

ISLAMABAD – A Pakistani court awarded the death penalty to a woman accused in a blasphemy case filed under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act.

Reports in local media said Judge Afzal Majoka of Islamabad special court sentenced woman to death for blasphemy related to a social media post. The accused woman was found guilty for sharing post against Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Besides death sentence, the court also slapped a fine of Rs300,000 along with 7-year prison sentence and an additional fine of Rs100,000 under Section 11 of the PECA Act.

Islamabad special court ordered her execution by hanging but the convicted woman granted right to appeal the decision within a month time.

Pakistan is known for strict blasphemy laws imposing severe penalties, including capital punishment for blasphemy against Islamic personalities. These laws are often interpreted broadly, leading to vague accusations and resulting in mob violence and extrajudicial killings.
