LAHORE – The party wing of ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz confused the reference to Mario Puzo’s novel ‘The Godfather’ by the apex court in Panama verdict and paid tribute to the premier for being awarded the title of ‘Godfather’.
A photo that went viral over the internet for the most hilarious reasons has been released by the youth and women wing of PML-N,and bears pictures of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz. What is truly hilarious is the fact that the staunch supporters actually congratulated prime minister Nawaz Sharif on ‘earning’ the title of ‘Godfather’.
What they do not seem to understand is the fact that the premier was never awarded the title of ‘Godfather’. In fact, the popular novel ‘The Godfather’ that harks back to 1969 was quoted as a reference in judgement – and was not intended to be a compliment.
The novel was not quoted in a bid to declare the first family transparent in its financial transactions. In fact, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa had quoted the novel and also reproduced a line in his dissenting note that mars the reputation of Sharif family.
The line in question was: “Behind every great fortune there is a crime.”
Political analysts opine that it was a matter of serious concern that the first family was compared to the mafia family mentioned in the novel.
Till now, no clarification has been issued by the party whether the congratulatory note was actually by the party wings or whether someone had trolled the embattled prime minister.

The Godfather is a crime novel written by Italian American author Mario Puzo. Originally published 1969 by G. P. Putnam’s Sons, the novel details the story of a fictional mafia family based in New York City (and Long Beach, New York), headed by Vito Corleone. The novel is set in the years 1945 to 1955, and also provides the back story of Vito Corleone from early childhood to adulthood.
It inspired a 1972 film of the same name. Two film sequels, including new contributions by Puzo himself, were made in 1974 and 1990. The first and second films are widely held in high esteem as examples of the cinematic arts.
Besides, legal references it was also quoted by the apex court in its 540-pages judgement that came out after a gapof 57 days on Thursday and ordered formation of a Joint Investigations Team to probe premier Nawaz Sharif and his sons Hassan and Hussain.
