LONDON – Former president Pervez Musharraf has tendered his resignation as the chairman of All Pakistan Muslim League, a party he formed in 2010.
Dr Amjad, who previously served as the secretary general of the party, has replaced the former dictator as the chief of the party, struggling to contest the forthcoming elections.
‘Pervez Musharraf was unable to oversee party from abroad which became a reason for the resignation,’ said the new party chairman on Friday.
He expressed that Musharraf had forwarded his resignation to Election Commission of Pakistan as the disqualification by the Peshawar High Court was still looming over his head.
‘Musharraf will, however, continue to be the patron-in-chief of the party,’ he added.
As per legal injunctions, the resignation of ‘disqualified’ Musharraf was necessary for the registration of APML with the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The former chief of the army staff, who ousted Nawaz Sharif from power in 1999, tried to contest the forthcoming elections for NA-1 seat of Chitral, however, the bid failed.
The Supreme Court had given a conditional permission to Musharraf to file nomination papers, however, directed him to appear before its Lahore registry.
Musharraf was also assured that he would not be arrested upon return, however, he did not show up before the court, prompting the chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar, to take back the permission.
