NAB seizes Peshawar BRT record in fresh raid on PDA office

ISLAMABAD – The National Accountability Bureau Khyber Pakhtunkhwa raided the office of Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) on Monday and took over all the record pertaining to the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

The development came after the Peshawar High Court (PHC) ordered the bureau to investigate the project; the accountability watchdog, in its raid, seized all the record related to the project and shifted it to its office for further investigation, a NAB-KP spokesperson confirmed to state media.

It may be mentioned that the PHC had directed NAB to initiate investigations into the BRT project and submit a report to in this regard.

Terming the BRT a “shady and shaky” project, the court ordered the Bureau to check as to how the scope of the project had increased by 50 per cent while the last date of its completion was June 21.

The initial approved cost was Rs 48.3 billion but a revised proposal called for an approval of Rs 67.9 billion, the PHC noted.

The PHC also observed that the project was contracted to a company that had been blacklisted by the Punjab government and that the funds meant for other public projects were diverted towards to it.

The court had earlier referred the matter to the human rights directorate of PHC, directing it to furnish a report regarding the progress of work, its environmental hazards and traffic issues at the end of each month.
