PM Nawaz condoles with bereaved families of Ahmadpur Sharqia tragedy, announces Rs2 mln for each family
BAHAWALPUR - After cutting short his visit to London, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday reached Ahmadpur Shariq and condoled with the families of victims who lost their lives in oil tanker tragedy.

While talking to media, the PM lamented over the deadly incident, besides expressing resolve to deeply investigate the accident in order to overcome such tragedies in future. In the deadly incident, around 153 persons burnt to death.

The PM announced that Rs2 million will be given to families of deceased as compensation.

He appreciated the efforts of Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and administration for handling the matter efficiently and providing better treatment to the injured.

Earlier, the PM, his wife Kalsoom Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif visited injured at Bahawal Victoria Hospital. During his visit, Commissioner Bahawalpur Saqib Zafar briefed the PM about the tragedy.

He inquired about the health of those injured in the incident at Victoria Hospital. The PM directed the authorities to provide better treatment to the admitted persons.

He also distributed cheques of Rs1 million among injured persons during his visit.

UK Visit

PM Nawaz, who reached London on Saturday from Saudi Arabia, offered Eid prayers with his sons Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz in Britain’s capital city. Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwana was also accompanying the prime minister.

Earlier, it was expected that the PM would stay there for a few days for a medical checkup. But following the terrible tragedy, he has shortened his stay and will return to Pakistan today.

The Pakistani prime minister and his family had been staying in Saudi Arabia for the last ten days of Ramazan where they performed Umrah.

Oil Tanker Blast

A lorry transporting carrying 40,000 litres of fuel while travelling from Karachi to Lahore on the main highway crashed on a road near the Pakistani city of Ahmedpur East on Sunday. A large crowd of people, including women and children, had gathered at the scene to collect the leaked oil when the fire erupted.

One hundred people were injured as a result of the incident, government officials said.
