NEW DELHI (Web Desk) -Indian cricketer S Sreesanth joined the BJP and will contest the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections from Thiruvananthapuram, NDTV reported on Saturday.
“Whenever I thought about joining politics I always thought about doing so with the BJP,” the cricketer said minutes after his induction.
BJP leaders in Kerala had said they were unaware of the move. Mr Sreesanth reached the party office this evening and was inducted into the party during a meeting of the BJP’s CEC – the top body for election-related decisions – after which a formal announcement was made.
Talking to reporters, 33-year-old pacer said his name had been cleared by the court in a match-fixing case and he was, therefore, not worried about any Opposition attack on him regarding the controversy.
A trial court in Delhi had dropped charges against him last year, but he still faces a ban on playing any form of cricket by the BCCI.
Sreesanth is a former Indian cricketer. He was a right-arm fast-medium-pace bowler and a right-handed tail-ender batsman. In first class cricket, he played for Kerala and in IPL for Rajasthan Royals.
