KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a heatwave alert for southern metropolis, Karachi, predicting that the mercury may touch 40 to 42 degrees Celsius between May 1 and May 3.
According to the Met Department, the metropolis and its adjoining areas would experience intense hot weather in the coming week due to the incoming heatwave.
“Sea breeze is likely to remain cut off and hot dry wind from the north and northwest is expected to prevail in Karachi during this period,” stated the Met Office.
In the backdrop of heatwave, Karachiites have been advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, besides hydrating themselves.

The Head of the Emergency Department at Karachi’s Jinnah Hospital Dr Seemi Jamali advised that people should remain indoors from 11 am to 4 pm and should wear loose and light-coloured clothes.
Karachi has a tragic history with the heatwave, one of such left over 1000 people dead in the city back in 2015, prompting concerns about the potential catastrophe every year.
This year’s heatwave alert has been issued days before the start of holy month Ramazan in which Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and sexual activities from dawn to dusk; the city has a population of 16 million as per the latest census conducted in 2017.
