Supreme Court grants six weeks for detailed report on railways losses

LAHORE – The Supreme Court sought a report on the losses incurred by Pakistan Railways and granted six weeks to the concerned officials in this regard.

A two-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, resumed the suo motu hearing of alleged Rs60 billion corruption in the department on Saturday and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique appeared before the court.

During the hearing, Saad said that the apex court should order an audit of the department for the last 10 years to know about the improvement in the performance of railways department.

To this,  Chief Justice Nisar remarked that only the influential individuals are held accountable.

Earlier when the court proceedings kicked off, the CJP inquired where the railways minister was. The railway secretary replied that the minister had not been summoned to appear before the bench court for today’s hearing.

“Please call the Railways Minister, we will speak in front of him,” the top judge remarked and summoned Khawaja Saad Rafique.

On April 14, the apex court had ordered the complete audit of Pakistan Railways during the case hearing.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Saqib Nisar had taken sou moto notice over the alleged corruption to the tune of Rs 60 billion in Pakistan Railways.

 

In the previous hearing of the case, there was an exchange of harsh comments between CJP and Saad Rafique, and the latter was warned of a contempt notice as well.

The top judge had inquired the minister about the losses incurred by the Pakistan Railways; he also ordered the audit of the public organisation and sought a report on it.
