ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan will skip the United Nation’s General Assembly session to focus his attention on the country’s economy.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi confirmed Khan’s domestic engagement as a reason behind no-show. He will head the Pakistani delegation at 73rd UN General Assembly session set to open on September 18.
“No, the prime minister is not going. I will lead Pakistani delegation,” Qureshi told reporters on Tuesday evening.
“The prime minister of Pakistan thinks that the present situation in the country needs attention,” Qureshi told the media.
There was a debate in Pakistan whether the new prime minister would attend the UN session or stay away as part of his massive reform agenda to focus on the issues faced by the country.
Qureshi expressed that the incumbent premier wants to focus on his new government and a looming currency crisis which impedes the growth of the country.
Earlier, it was reported that on the directives of the 22nd premier, Pakistan would send a brief delegation to the UNGA session, under the same austerity drive promised by Imran Khan.
