PKMAP s Majeed Achakzai released on bail in traffic cop killing case

QUETTA – Member Balochistan Assembly Majeed Khan Achakzai, who was in police custody for his involvement in the killing of a traffic police officer, was released on bail from Quetta’s district jail on Friday.

In June, Achakzai had rammed his vehicle into traffic cop Haji Attaullah who was tossed into the air with intense injuries leading to his death while he was on duty at Quetta’s GPO Chowk.

Following the incident, the police had nabbed the lawmaker and a case concerning the death of the traffic sergeant was registered in an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) under Section 322 (punishment for murder) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, which is still ongoing.

During today’s hearing, the ATC judge ordered the release of the legislator with the directives that the accused should submit surety bonds worth half a million rupees.

A few minutes later, Achakzai was released to see a large number of Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party supporters present outside the jail. The supporters followed Achakzai’s vehicle all the way to his residence and showered rose petals on his vehicle.

Prior to his remand in police custody, the Pkmap legislator had confessed to his involvement in the accident that led to the death of traffic warden, however, Civil Lines Police Station had still lodged a First Information Report against ‘unknown individuals’.

Achakzai was elected to the provincial assembly from Killa Abdullah on PB-13 and he is already on bail in the murder case of a civilian and has been exonerated in separate kidnapping and vehicle tampering cases.
